The internal dimensions these figures assume
Every pallet count on this page comes from two numbers, the usable internal length and the internal width, so here they are rather than buried in a spreadsheet. Treat them as typical rather than exact: internal dimensions vary between manufacturers and model years, and the only authoritative figure for a specific trailer is its own spec sheet or VIN plate.

The rear door opening on both is roughly 98 inches wide, narrower than the interior, which is one reason practical counts sit at or below the geometric maximum. Older vans built to a 96 inch external width are narrower still, and two 48 inch pallets will not go side by side in one of those at all.
Where the numbers come from

Turn the pallets 90 degrees so the 40 inch side runs across and each row now eats 48 inches, giving 13 rows and 26 pallets on the same deck. The 48ft trailer works the same way: 570 inches divided by 40 gives 14 rows and 28 pallets, while 570 divided by 48 gives 11 rows and 22.
Nothing about the trailer or the pallets changed between those two answers. That is why a forum post saying 26 and a vendor page saying 30 can both be correct, and why neither is much use without the layout attached.
The three layout patterns
Straight loading
Straight loading places every pallet the same way round in even rows. It is the fastest to load, the easiest to secure and the easiest to unload in sequence, which is why it is the default for most freight. Its weakness is that it commits you to one orientation for the whole deck, so whatever length that orientation wastes at the tail is simply lost.
Turned loading
Turned loading is straight loading with the pallets rotated 90 degrees. It is worth doing when the rotated row depth divides more evenly into the deck length, which is exactly the difference between the 26 and 30 pallet answers above. It also changes which side of the pallet the forks enter from, so check that the pallets are four-way entry before planning for it.
Pinwheel loading
Pinwheel loading alternates the orientation within a block so that pallets interlock, typically in groups of three or five. It can recover floor that a single orientation wastes, which is how mixed layouts land at figures like 24 on a 48ft van that no straight layout produces. The cost is time: it is slower to load, harder to secure, and it makes sequenced unloading at multiple stops considerably more awkward.
